When can a landlord charge a late fee for rent in Connecticut, and how much?
Short answer
Late charges: only after the 9-day grace period (4 days for a one-week tenancy), at most the lesser of $5 a day up to $50 or 5% of the late payment, once per payment
When: A late charge may be assessed only on a payment made after the 9-day grace period (4 days for one-week tenancies)
A late charge is allowed only if the written rental agreement provides for it, and only on rent paid after the grace period: nine days after the due date, or four days for a one-week tenancy. The charge may not exceed the lesser of $5 per day up to $50, or 5% of the delinquent payment, and only one late charge may be assessed per late payment.

"Such late charge may not exceed the lesser of (1) five dollars per day, up to a maximum of fifty dollars, or (2) five per cent of the delinquent rent payment" cga.ct.gov
"The landlord may not assess more than one late charge upon a delinquent rent payment, regardless of how long the rent remains unpaid." cga.ct.gov
